Giovanni Pascoli – 1884
“Among the town where I have lived, Matera is the one which is smiling at me and the one I can see through a veil of Poetry and Melancholy”
Carlo Levi – 1952
“in the Sassi caves there is the capital of the peasants, the hidden heart of their antique civilization. Whoever sees Matera cannot but get astonished, because its beauty is very much expressive and sweet”.
Our mission
The Sassi of Matera are a big economic and cultural heritage not only for the inhabitants of the town but also for the entire humanity. This was UNESCO aim when in 1993 it let the Sassi enter among the Italian places defined as Humanity Heritage.
Our mission is to let people learn about these places designed by nature since the Palaeolithic Era and then become a symbol of the match between men and nature.
Thanks to the services we provide and to our love for the everyday work, we want to get our town near to all those people who try to reach us attracted by the beauty of these enchanting places and the peace and restoration they inspire.
For many years the Sassi have been hidden because symbol of degrade and poverty. Nowadays they represent the remembrance of an abandoned Southern Italy once considered an uncomfortable appendix but now a crib for history and culture.
Visiting the Sassi we invite you admire the beauty of our places trying not to waste our heritage end helping us to keep it untouched as time passes.
Our hope is an addition to be a small example for many young people who love their native land and want to build something there instead of emigrating somewhere else thus abandoning their houses and homes.
